If you have been waiting for the return of the Innovate UK Smart Grants, you might be waiting a while.
Innovate UK confirmed a complete cancellation of all Smart Grant rounds for the 2025/2026 financial year.
The reason? A massive influx of low-quality, AI-generated applications.
By allowing generative AI and volume-driven consultancies to easily churn out generic, templated responses, the system became completely overwhelmed.
Applications surged past 2,100+ per round.Success rates plummeted to a brutal 2% to 3%.Evaluators were buried in AI ‘slop’ making it incredibly difficult for genuinely groundbreaking, human-led innovation to stand out.
What happens next?
Innovate UK won’t be reopening the doors with a new deadline. Instead, they are completely rewriting the rules. This will take some time.
Future iterations are being co-designed alongside the SME community to focus heavily on measurable economic impact, commercial viability, and applicant filtering.
Instead of a standard “reopening” of the original quarterly format, the agency is permanently replacing the legacy model with targeted pilots and localized support frameworks.
